Even a person taking statins to control their raised cholesterol levels are among the tens of thousands of Britons affected by the increased premiums.
Experts slammed the charges hike, saying they were "out of proportion" to the actual cost of insuring those with higher levels, which are also out of line with life and health insurance.
Jules Payne, chief executive of Heart UK, said the policy effectively penalises those who have been "responsible" enough to get their cholesterol checked and were working to control it.
She said: “There is no reason why insurance premiums should be higher because of raised cholesterol that is being managed.
“This penalises responsible people who are actually at lower risk than many others."
It is estimated more than half of the UK population suffer with high cholesterol and statins - Britain's most commonly prescribed drug - are taken by hundreds of thousands.

Seeing statins are supposedly a panacea to cure all ills then surely the insurance companies should be reducing the premiums unless of course the don't believe the hype
