    Pheasant - check!

Brussels sprouts tree - check!  - although buying sprouts on them stem is better for the farmers and they keep better it can be a bugger carrying them home, I found several eyeballs and a small dog embedded on the branches

    Chestnuts - check!

Extra bacon (to wrap round the pheasant) - check!

Two big fat smelly bloaters (for when I get bored of the pheasant) - check!

Big hunk of smoked cods roe - for when I get bored with the smoked salmon - check!

I went to the smokehouse in Orford and followed up with a walk along the sea wall which I aborted about halfway along because I had collected about a kilo of clay on the sole of each boot.

Jarlsberg - for when I get bored with the Vacheron d'Or - check!

Extra bottles of Chilean Carmenere - check!

    Sorted!

I just polished off half the pheasant's breast, wrapped in bacon, with chestnuts and sprouts and a couple of glasses of Carmenere. No walk since the weather was dire, although less so than Cumbria. Time for a lie down now . . .

    Me too!

Near disaster! I forgot to buy the purple sprouting broccoli - thought I still had some left - so had to have spinach with my venison sausages.

Now I have the broccoli but have run out of mushrooms.

Hopefully as the days get longer my memory will improve, already I'm sure the evenings are getting lighter.

Now they are half price I may treat myself to a Christmas pud - with cream, ground flax seeds and brandy it shouldn't do too much harm

I would have thought that depends on the quantity of brandy  drunken

    Found an entertaining blog quote

"I have this nagging suspicion agriculture (and particularly grain domestication)was a byproduct of beer brewing (which-came-first-wise, that is).

    The sequence would be:

    1. alcohol spontaneously fermented from various wild plants is occasionally found in the wild (I don't know, in puddles or whatever.)

    2. This intoxicant is recognized and valued almost immediately as a powerful social lubricant; i.e. it helps immensely the beta males and females to get laid and procreate.

    3. Consequently a lot of attention is paid to the circumstances around which the magic brew is found in the wild. Eventually they put 2 and 2 together and figure out how to cultivate & ferment the plants and thus ensure a steady supply.

    5. Because more people are getting laid on a regular basis due to regular alcohol consumption, populations explode.

    6. Necessarily, to keep up with ever-growing demand, they begin to organize society around this activity.

    4. But they end up with a lot of leftover surplus. Eventually someone figures out how to make bread out of it.

    5. Presto, the disease of modern civilization is born. "
