I have used that quote from Milton before on this blog. To some it may seem a bit heavy, or over the top, but trust me, diabetes can be a living hell for some. Two weeks after my diagnosis of type two diabetes, I buried my Father. He was a type two diabetic, and his last fifteen years were blighted with diabetic complications. Two heart attacks, a diabetic foot, and a once very strong man reduced to a physical wreck. This did not need to be. He came from a generation who believed Doctors and medical people were above reproach and followed their instructions to the letter. The standard NHS diet for diabetics and took his medication religiously. When he finally checked out, he was using insulin and ten different medications, he was a credit to big pharma.

I was given the standard NHS diabetic dietary information, a prescription for two metformin a day, and told to come back in three months time. This is pretty routine in the UK as can be seen on forums and blogs. Well, that was easy, sorted eh ? no way. Following the NHS diet and taking my metformin, my BG numbers never got better than twelve. Very basic research had informed me these sort of numbers lead to diabetic complications. I joined the diabetes.co.uk forum and it was one of the best and luckiest decisions of my life. I say lucky, because just as I joined, a man called Fergus Craig had just joined. Fergus was a long term type one diabetic. He had gone from obesity, poor control and the onset of complications, to safe weight, and HbA1c in the fours. From crashing his car into a lamp post, due to a hypo, to riding in 100 mile bike races and running marathons. He achieved this remarkable turn around by way of a strict Bernstein level lowcarb high fat diet. His teachings made perfect sense to me, and I gave lowcarb a try, I was I believe his first lowcarb disciple, and I reported my success on the forum.(My success stories and over 2000 of my posts were deleted by Cugila the forum mod)  By lowcarbing, my HbA1c had gone from almost twelve (BG 26) to in the fives within three months, fasting  BG from12-14 to 4-6, trigs from over three to less than 1, and around 50lbs in weight lost. Other newly diagnosed forum diabetics achieved the same great results as me. People like Wiflib, Ian D, John Wilson, Ray Davies, Graham and many more.

So many posting great success stories, many on nil or minimal meds. So many reporting non diabetic BG numbers and easy weight loss, it was brilliant, Fergus had shown us the Holy Grail, who could argue with the lowcarb way of life, what could possibly go wrong ? I consider myself a street wise sort of guy, not easily taken in or fooled, but Jeez, how naive was I, when it came to the crazy world of diabetes. Almost immediately, Fergus and his new recruits came under attack. Forum mods to fellow diabetics and even a Dietician, put the boot in at every opportunity. Lowcarb antis, trolls and allsorts came out of the woodwork. To cut a long story short. Fergus walked, some of us lowcarbers got banned, and the lunatics took over the asylum. History has repeated itself on what I now call the forum of flog. Other staunch lowcarb promoters have been banned and the lunacy continues at the flog to this present day.

Fergus’ stunning and uplifting story is here. Such is the modesty of the guy, I phoned him this morning and mentioned the video and he said I did not know it was being recorded.

Thanks for the Fergus video Eddie - I'd heard of him (and confused him with another Fergus at one point) but not seen his story properly.

    Hi Indy and Sanguine

Fergus' knowledge of diabetes control is truly encyclopaedic. He could email Dr. Richard Bernstein and get replies within a day. After he got fed up dealing with naysayers etc. on the forum and walked he started going to seminars etc, talking to Doctors and other medical professionals. He is doing great work, but a tragedy he walked from the forum, he could have helped so many more people. Same goes for ex mod Dr. Katharine Morrison and Dr. Jay Wortman, both diabetes experts. Of course these sort of people have better things to do than waste their time dealing with the 'usual suspects' almost every time they posted.

My background was on usenet, the newsgroups alt.support.diabetes and asduk. EXACTLY the same thing happened there, a small group of low carb antis, mainly but not exclusively Type 1s, and some on pumps, trashed all the clueful Type 2s and drove them out.

Just as with Fergus there were a few Type 1s who were VERY clueful about Type 2 as well (one of them because as an adult onset Type 1/LADA he was initially misdiagnosed) and they also walked after the endless attacks.

Usenet in general has had its day as an information source, the noise to signal ratio became extreme long ago. A "troll" used to be a semi-humorous post which was made to get a rise out of people. Later it became an individual who attacked everyone except their cronies. So when I saw it occurring on DCUK I was disappointed but not in the least surprised. I still find it hard to comprehend the mentality of these people though.

Yes I find it very hard to understand what motivates these people. I can't understand why they want others to suffer the complications of diabetes. What is that all about?

I can understand that back 7 or so years ago people were a bit wary of LCHF. Fair enough, but the same people are still arguing against it now, even when it has been proven to work. Also we low carbers are often told "it's the individual's choice which diet they follow" Yes I agree, so why do they continue to try to put newbies off of LCHF? Surely it's their choice?

A common statement is "I don't follow LCHF, I count calories, or low fat..."whatever. OK maybe these methods really work for those people. They didn't for me. I am pretty sure that LCHF would work for them too, if they would only try it.

"I still find it hard to comprehend the mentality of these people though"

It is easy, but does take time to comprehend. They are twisted individuals who missed the boat. Check around and they all talk of serious complications and poor control and knowledge (we have the evidence). They fell for the carb up and shoot up, hook line and sinker and the healthy sat fat will kill ya dogma. That being said the antis love me, we get around ten negative comments a day on our blog in this vein, received yesterday.

"Well Shootin' Blanks, you seem to have gone down about as well as a fart in a lift.

Once again, after a flurry of activity, you managed to pull defeat out of the jaws of success, and ensured the forum matches your bloated corpse.

    Well dead.

At least one thing you can be proud of, no matter what others try, your personality will always shine through, and drive everyone away.

No doubt the 'new' posters will be back on the 'Live Forum' soon, and wondering why you still bother to breathe?"

Always anon, but we are 99% sure we know who this one is. You guessed it, a DCUK forum mod.

A bit off topic here,I remember during a visit to London in the eighties, there were big ads all over the place for some aftershave called FCUK. Its funny to me at least, that I now associate this with DCUK, except for the fragrance of course.

In the research community things seem to be going in both directions at once. There was a time when Ethics Committees would routinely ban research into anything other than low fat diets, and the few studies that were made would be refused publication.

Then Richard Feinman, Eric Westman, Jeff Volek, Stephen Phinney et al. started the Metabolism Society and published in their journal Nutrition and Metabolism.

Now you find their papers published in the most prestigious journals, and not only that, there are a whole bunch of people no-one's ever heard of before who start from the premise that low fat diets didn't work so let's find out why, and what does.

At the same time there's an ever more desperate backlash from the defenders of Conventional Wisdom. They are unable to let go of their beliefs even in the face of uncontrovertible evidence.

I suspect there's more than a little of that inability to let go of dogma in these people "it MUST be right because I believe it"

With diabetes there's also the fact that when patients were routinely put on low carb diets a few decades back and stayed on them, they failed to disintegrate in the same way modern diabetics do. That's less easy to explain away.
