Don't know about you but a blog I enjoy reading is 'Authority Nutrition'.

Kris Gunnars and his team do compile some excellent articles, and give food for thought. His latest talks about the Top 50 Healthiest Foods.

Many of them are included in my LCHF menu plans but not all. I think I'd probably put number 7. eggs at the top of my list and wouldn't include number 47. potatoes.......... but how about you?

Can you give your favourite five that you would include - and then five that you wouldn't?

Here are my personal favourites and bugbears.

    Yes to:
    eggs
    berries
    virgin coconut oil
chia seeds (my new favourite thing)
    cauliflower

Cauli is not a superfood, but it is on my list as it has really helped me low carb. The week I caught the beetus, I despaired at the thought of not having anything nice to eat ever again. Then I tried cheesy cauli mash for the first time and knew that everything would be just fine! Very Happy

    No to:

Sugar - I would have the word removed from all the dictionaries in the land! This might stop Davina McCall banging on about going "sugar free" when what she really means is that she is eating loads of maple syrup, honey and carbs.

Bananas - They have enjoyed such good PR for years. This makes them sneaky.

Anything that Gok Wan advertises on telly - I am not going to take dietary advice from this man. He has a history of stavation and laxative abuse, so when he tells me that a low fat yogurt will help me lose weight in a healthy way, I get annoyed. Sorry, harsh, but true. I wish him well, but I don't like his patronising "you deserve a treat, fat woman" adverts.

Caffeine drinks/red bull etc - I don't like working with people who drink this stuff. They are wired to the moon and make my job harder.

Anything with a face. It's decomposing flesh and not healthy in my book.

(I fogot my painkillers this morning so am a little ranty in general)

For all those who want to live a healthier lifestyle the first thing many of us, in fact probably most of us, look at first is food. The key is to cut out, or down, eating processed foods and concentrate instead on eating whole real foods.

This list of the top 50 healthiest foods may prove interesting and helpful to those who haven't read it before.

Indeed many of us who did read it first time round may find it beneficial too .... there are some great foods listed. Smile

Wait 'til may for when the british asparagus season starts and get some spears, trim any woodiness off the stalks and fry it in a hot pan with butter and serve with lamb chops/cutlets or some roasted/bbq'd chicken or even dipped in a runny boiled egg! It's really good Mo! Smile

I am beginning to think Mo has lead a very sheltered life. Fresh asparagus, grub of the gods.

Leeks are one of my favourite vegetables. I don't ever remember having them growing up which is odd ? Were they difficult to get hold of in the 80's, 90's ? Perhaps my mum just never liked them. I only discovered them by chance and loved them ever since. Fried in butter :-)

    Post by Jan1 Fri Mar 27 2015, 15:08

I just love the internet at times because you always find out more, and in this case I now know far more about leeks than I did before. Emperor, Nero (37-68 AD), ate leeks in quantity, cooked in oil - a little similar to how Mo likes to eat his today!

I love onions and I love leeks ...... being lazy sometimes I find I can cut and slice leeks more easily than onions and they don't make me cry.

Anyway I found the History of Leeks interesting - hope you do to.

    History of Leeks

The Latin name for the leek is Allium porrum. The word Allium shows its relation to the onion family. Even so, onions are considered to be more harsh, or even low-brow. Leeks have a more upscale appeal. The flavor is thought to be more subtle and sweet than the average onion.

Although scientists are by no means certain, it is believed that leeks, like many herbs, are native to the Mediterranean area and possibly Asia Minor. Even though leeks have only recently become popular in the United States, they have been grown and used for cooking for more than 3,000 years in Asia and Europe.

Even the Bible mentions leeks. In Numbers (11:5) we read, "Remember how in Egypt we had fish tor the asking, cucumbers, and watermelons, leeks and onions and garlic." This was from a lament by the Israelites as they wandered in the desert searching for the Promised Land. Later leeks would be traditionally consumed on Rosh Hashanah. It was meant to symbolize the desire for the people to have their enemies "cut off". This came from the idea that the Hebrew word for leek is karti, which is similar to the verb, to cut off, or yikartu.

It is widely reported that the Emperor, Nero (37-68 AD), ate leeks in quantity, cooked in oil. He believed it would improve his singing voice. He was so well known for eating leeks that he acquired the nickname, Porophagus (leek eater).

Leeks may have been introduced to Wales via Phoenician traders. The subsequent popularity of leeks in that country is exhibited by the fact that in 620 AD (or perhaps 640), King Cadwallader and his men wore leeks in their hats to differentiate themselves from their enemies, the Saxons. The onion-like vegetable was associated with Saint David and it was said that any maiden who slept with a leek under her pillow on his feast day (March 1st) would see her future husband in her dreams. The leek has become a national symbol of Wales.

Leeks were first brought to the United States, Canada, and Australia by the early settlers of those respective nations. The French call the leek, poireau, which also means "simpleton". In Europe, leeks are thought of as a kind of "poor man's asparagus".Agatha Christie named one of her most famous characters, the French detective, Poirot, after the leek. Today leeks are not as popular as they were in ancient times, largely because other similar vegetables such as onions are more convenient to use.
